THE FIRST »BUILT TOGETHER« SKI
THE NEW REVOLT 121
An 8-person team of developers, including Lead Engineer Lucas Romain and Product and Team Manager Jean-Claude Pedrolini, worked with squad members Markus Eder, Paddy Graham, Fabio Studer, Colter Hinchliffe, Tanner Rainville, Sam Smoothy and Tom Ritsch, for nearly a year crafting the new Revolt 121.
There are many steps to creating a new product like this, with each member of the team encouraged to contribute their ideas and expectations for the product. Lucas Romain offers insights into both worlds, as he is not only an incredibly gifted engineer, but also a former pro skier. His unique perspective ensures that every detail is considered from first sketch to final on-snow testing.
»There aren't many engineers capable of understanding our visions with every fibre of their being. Lucas is one of them. He listens to us and is always there for us. I don't think I've ever met another engineer who personally tests the skis as hard as he does,« says Markus Eder.
And this hard work has paid dividends. The new ski is light, playful and perfectly adapted for the needs and demands of the team. It is more than just a different design, but emanates a completely new product identity. "If you spend every day on skis, you come up with a lot of ideas about what a perfect ski should be. To see some of those concepts become reality is seriously what every athlete dreams about," says Colter Hinchliffe.
The visual design is also being handled in the same spirit as the rest of the campaign, with various international artists invited to work with our hero skiers on dreaming up a fresh look for the skis.
The ski graphics for the 2019/20 season are designed by New Zealand artist Ken Griffen, himself a passionate skier. "For me it was a perfect project, and the collaboration with the athletes was really something special. You could see the knowledge and experience flowing together into a design that really took on an identity of its own.“
»This project was really perfect for me because I have a passionate background in skiing«
KEN GRIFFEN I ARTIST I New Zealand
»The painting is an illustration of what your brain looks like when you are happy and your mind is full of endorphins, a feeling very familiar to skiers. The base graphic is a person’s face looking up at a mountain with excitement for the line they are planning in their mind.«

Paddy Graham I Team Rider
»I've always enjoyed taking part in product development, but this time the athletes are more strongly involved than in any project before. We all spend a lot of time traveling and skiing all around the world in all kinds of conditions. If we take our experience and blend it with the brilliance of the engineers, there's this fantastic chance to make a truly remarkable ski «
MARKUS EDER I Team Rider
»It’s awesome that Völkl brought us all down here. It really helps a lot that we are not emailing each other across different countries. It is really important that we are here building it together.«
TANNER RAINVILLE I Team Rider
JEAN-CLAUDE PEDROLINI I Product Manager
An unbridled passion for skiing and global mountain culture are shared obsessions that link not just our athletes, but also our engineers and commissioned artists as well. »BUILT TOGETHER« is intended to capture this devotion, welding it with our unmatched knowledge of product expertise. It`s mission is to pursue new paths and create something extraordinary in the process. The idea is to directly involve the athletes in ski development, with the goal of creating skis that fit their wants and desires perfectly.
»Skiing everyday you have a lot of ideas, and seeing some of them come to life really is an athletes dream«
